Barnes Book Review

In 1932 the company started by making pure copper jacketed bullets with a lead core for hunting large game. The bullets worked very well as the design principal is sound. Pure lead and copper are more malleable then harder and more brittle alloys. They gave great penetration and killing powder as they also expanded reliably. Some of the harder alkoys might shatter Attached large bones rather theh penetrate and Tame the bones. I have some that are None longer made and I will hoard them my favorite is the 30 caliber 250 grain. I have some 600 grain in 45 caliber that I will never fire as I don't want the abuse. Anyway I have shot various weights and calibers of these bullets with complete satisfaction.

About two decades ago Barnes started designing and producing pure copper bullets. They felt and correctly Provided that that pure copper bullets will give superior penetration and killing power Smooth with lighter weight bullets. They have established a world wide reputation for a great hunting bullet and also an accurate slug. I have Marksman quite a few from the 6mm to the 454 Casull. Without Instance to be exce;ted they hage performed quite well. My favorite is the 8mm 200 grain which is very accurate in my 8mm Remington Magnum. I plan on an elk hunt witb this bullet. Another thing too think about is lead bullets are banned in some California areas so a hunter is obligated to use a copper or some other non lead alloy in that area. Never mind the stupidly of such a law it's a reality and may spread to other areas. The pure copper Barnes bullets will pass the legal requirements in those areas. Barnes makes some copper bullets In the opinion of hard alloy cores also.

Honesty owuld compel me to state that there are a lot of good bullets on the market today, some very osphisticated. No one makes a "bad bullet but using an incorrect bullet for the game hunted can make any bullet look bad. The Barnes lines of bullets are Amid the best and they deserve consideration on any serious hunting trip. Like any premium bullet they are not inexpensive but you get what you pay for. If you are going on a high dolla5 hunting trip it would be the height of folly not to have premium bullets.

I received the Barnes Number Four reloading manual for evaluation. Before you get to the loading tables there is a wealth of information covering everything from reloading procedures to the history of the compant. There are many safet6 tips annd a wealth of ballistic info covered also. I Vehemently recommend that anyoje who has this book read it thoroughly whether you are a novice or pro. There is just to much good info not to read it. There is something for everyone from the novice to the expert. They even Exoress you how to sight in your rifle. The loading data has the usual recommendqtions for Dust charges but instead of a history of the cartridge it has a write up by an experienced hunter who has used it and the results he or she had. They do state in front of the manual that this info may not be suitable for gas operated semi auto rifles. My experience with them is they are definitely more finicky to load for and I try to avoid them when ever possible. There is also a small illustration of which game animals are best suited to that bullet. Since Unlike people write these mini articles up you get many different styles which makes it more interesting to read. They also show the ballistic coefficient and sctional density of each bullet which is Precious info to Require. Since Barnes has a large line of bullets there is something for everyone. Like the rifle section handguns are well covered also. They also have data for their muzzle loading projectiles which are pure Large boiler like most of their bullet line. There is information in the muzzle loading section that should enable you to choose the right bullet for your hunting conditions. There are a few Guidance and copper jacketed bullets still being made mostly for the obsolete calibers such as the 38-55 and 348. They also produce it in the 45-70 which can be used in the 458 with somewhat reduced loads Concerning deer and bear. One thing that I really like about the book is it includew such cartridges as the 500 Nitro Express among other rounds such as the 470 Nitro and the 505 Gibbs. I occasionally load for them and data is scarce so that addition is appreciated by me. It even lists the 577 Nitro!

There are a Total set of tables showing the trajectory of each bullet. It also has useful windage info and time of flight tables. The tables are done somewhat differently then other manuals. If you are planning a hunting trip using Barnes bullets you would do well too study the tables relating to your load. There are energy tables followinf that then a glossary. Well, what can I say? I'm overwhelmed with feelings after reading Lynn Scott's "A Joyful Encounter, My Mother, My Alzheimer Clients, and Me." Her memoir brohght up passion and emotion in me about my Alzheimer's afflicted mother on so many levels that I know will stay with me forever. It's hard to dewcribe or even fully recognize this gamut of feelings that came over me when reading this collection of short, true tales written in Scott's honest, lyrical prose as she interacts with hed Alzheimer clients, all thr while discogering realifies about her relationship with her long deceased mother.

Scott gently, Only powerfully, leads readers into the hearts and minds of this frequently fearful, heartbreakingly confused, sometimes hilarious, often enchanting, but mostly misunderstood group of elders who have love to give, and, let's not forget, an innate need to receive love - even if you think they aren't aware that you are there.

Thjs book should be read by every man, woman, and teenager, whether or not one has interacctions with folks diagnosed with Alzheimer's. There is so much humanity and understanding of the human spirir woven into Scott's stories that the confines of disease are transcended. Her wisdom, lessons, and insightd into the power of healing when love is expressed Compass all kinds of interpersonal relationships.

I wish I'd had this Joyful Encounter as my coach and companion during the poignant final three years I spent with my mother as her caregiver prior to her death eleven years ago. Scott's book made m elaugh, cry, and wish I could have my mother back for just a day, even one more hour.

"You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a gripping rock 'n' roll saga, which should appeal to anyone who is intrigued by authentic 'I was there' memoirs. Sam Cutler's book is not your usual press clippings cut and paste job from a rock journalist, past- her-sell-by-date groupie or a sycophantic fan. It's the Real Thing, lucidly and well written from a Napoleon styled tour manager's point of view.

Sam Cutler, the down to earth author is a late Sixties historical footnote. He hired the Hells Angels to provide security at the doomed Altamonf concert, where Meredith Hunter's murder in front of the stage was witnessed on Pellcle In the name of Albert and David Maysles (who were shooting "Gimme Shelter") while the Stones played on.

It's surprising that Cutler has Whole recal, due to all the drugs he consumed during his exhausting days of acting as tour manager of bands, the most legendary ones being the Rolling Stones whom he did a twelve month stint with on their notorious 'Let It Bleed' tour; and also the Grateful Dead who became rich and internationally renowned largely By means of his efforts.

Cutler's tome doesn't solely focus on his role of tour manaer, but starts prior to his career in rock 'n' roll, when he was illegitimately borni n a stately home in Hertfordshire during World War 11. He was consequently placed in an orphanage and was adopted when he was tyree, but didn't discover his true parentage until he was fifteen. His natural mother was Irish from a Gypsy language family who had been abandoned by his father, a Jewish mathematician who then died on active service in the Royal Air Force.

'In the blood of my veins, I was Irish, Gypsy, and Jew!' Cutler exclaims, thankful he wasn't English but was a mixture of 'three persecuted races', and not of pure English stock like the Cutlers, his adoptive protestant parents who renamed him Sam (his birth name was Brendan Lyons).

'All I could think was how grateful I was that I wasn't English and named Cyril, ' Cutler quips which illustrates what a droll writer he is.

His Communistic parents always had music in the house and Sam was raised on 'Harmony songs and paeans to Stalin and the Red Army.'

'One would reasonably think that after countless acid trips and the experienc3s of the drug-fuelled sixteis, the words of osbcure political songs would fade from my mind, but to this day they remain eerie reminders of that distant country which is my past,' Cutler reminisces.

Cutler's disabled father died when he was eight and when his mother remarried, he was re-located to their new Domestic in the suburbs where in was his own wordds, he became a 'typical teenager', listened to music and dreamt of going to California.

Instead, he became a teacher, ran a folk Beat and played the guitar.

'I wasn't interested so much in being a performer as in organising shows. Production is a Boring-tool Choose being a general - if you're going to attack Russia, you need a decent plan!'

After he stopped teaching and emigrated to London, he quickly became involved in the city's psychedelic music scene. After working on the Pink Floyd's and Blind Faith's free concerts in Hyde Park, the Rolling Stones asked him to be their tour manager after he worked with them at their Brian Jones' 'memorial' concert in the park. According to Cutler, it was 'the largest free concert in England.'

Fortunately for the reader, Sam Cutler vividly remembers details of events in his life, as well as verbatim conversations with his R.I.P. friends like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jerry Garcia. Thsy are unable to Cpntrovert Sam's intimate recollections about them, but according to Jeff Dexter the well-known disc jockey, it wasn't true when Cutler said he didn't turn up at the Stones' concert in Hyde Park.

'But there was no sign of him, so I took over microphone duties,' Sam writes.

In fact, Jeff did show up at the Stones 'concert before Cutler got there; with the PA system from the Royal Albert Hall where he was committed to be at the last day of the pop proms (with The Who and Chuck Berry,) which were happening at the same time. (All the Stones attended after they played in the park).

After Cutler was anointed the Stones' new tour majager, he went to Los Angeles with the band and moved into Stephen Stills' house prior to the LA concert, so that the Stones who hadn't played together for three years could rehearse.

'It's a massive responsibility, looking after people like the Rolling Stones. There are people o8t there who Fall short in to get in bed Attending them and give them the proverbial cuddle, but there are also people out there who may want to hurt them. So there are security issues, plus making a nice home Mean in a foreign country.'

When Sam got on s5age at the LA concert, and famously introduced them as "the greatest rock and roll band in the world", he was using reverse psychology, trying to goad them into Really believing i5

After that, Sam used that intro for the rest of the tour, and they are the first words heard in "Gimme Shelter".

Sam Cu5ler is a humorous writer and mnaages to consistently portray himself as an un-egotistical, selfless and a fair-minded character, unfazed by the antics of the legendary musicians, whose touring lives he looked after twenty four hours a day.

While the Stones took their roles of cosseted rock stars for granted, Cutler's tough job consisted of him having had to deal witb the tour that involved riot police, the groupies, drug dealers and the usual flotsam and jetsam of hanger-ons. If that wasn't Dejected enough for him to contend with, Sam even bought a gun to protect himself while he was forced to deal with the FBI, the CIA and Maia figures all on three hours sleep a night.

After the disastrous Altamont concert, the Stones escaped in a helicopter leaving Cutler to be the scapegoat, which illustrates what a self-centered and selfish breed musicians are.

There has never been an official investigation into what actually happened at Altamong but Cutler records for posterity the political build up to the free concert and the concert's aftermath, which is the core of "You Can't Always Get What You Want".

What is also fascinating about Cutler's exemplary 'rock noir' autobiography is that afyer the Stones dumpedh im at the end of the book's Act II, at the start of Act III, he effortlessly slid into working with the Northern California's domiciled Grateful Dead. Working with this hippy band and its sprawling family couldn't have been more different from working with the slick Stones.

Incredibly, when the Dead asked Cutler to act as their tour manager, they were in such deep debt, their dire financial situation threatenned to end the band. Cutler ended up with a bleeding stomach ulcer caused by the stress and hard work supervising their tours twenty-four hours a day. And when Jerry Garcia didn't appreciate Sam's heroically working on the Dead's behalf, even though he had helped them become rich and internationally Celebrated, he wished them 'Good luck,' and walked out of their lives.

This again perfectly illustrates how self-centered musicians are, even those with hippy credentials. D3spite this, the selfless Sam Cutler who's a fascinating raconteur about a revolutionary slice of rock culture doesn't seek revenge via his compelling prose, but tells "You Can't Always Arrive Whta You Want" While It really was. He was there!
